August rains hit mountain regions as seasonal weather shifts (videos)

Rain showers began falling across various mountainous regions of Cyprus on Wednesday afternoon (27 August), with videos shared on social media capturing the unusual August precipitation.

The Meteorological Service had forecast the possibility of isolated showers or thunderstorms during the afternoon, particularly in mountainous areas, as seasonal low pressure affects the region.

Wednesday evening’s weather will remain mostly clear, though intermittent, locally increased low cloud cover may develop, mainly along western and northern coasts.

Light fog may form locally later in the evening. Winds will blow mainly north-westerly and locally north-easterly to south-easterly at weak Force 3. Sea conditions will remain slight to moderate, with temperatures dropping to 23°C inland, around 24°C on the coast, and 18°C in higher mountain areas.

Thursday will see mainly clear conditions, though locally increased cloud cover developing during the afternoon may produce isolated showers in mountainous regions.

Winds will gradually shift to south-westerly to north-westerly, weak to moderate Force 3-4, becoming locally strong Force 5 along coastal areas during the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise to 37°C inland, around 33°C on south-eastern, eastern and northern coasts, 31°C on remaining coastal areas, and 27°C in higher mountains.

Friday and Saturday will experience temporarily increased cloud cover, which may produce isolated afternoon showers in mountainous areas. Sunday will see mainly clear conditions.

Temperatures will show a gradual slight decrease through Saturday, with no significant change expected Sunday, remaining close to average climatological values for the season.
