Annual grand opera in Paphos’ Medieval Castle square a thing of the past

Hopes the annual grand opera in the square of the Medieval Castle of Kato Pafos would take place in September as was the custom for two decades have been dashed.

The hope was raised after the recent placing of portable stands at the Castle’s square but town officials said these were for the upcoming concert by Greek singer Costas Hadjis.

And informed sources also told Philenews the very popular international opera which was part of the annual Paphos Aphrodite Festival in September is now a thing of the past.

The opera was organized in the picturesque square for 15 years and got suspended in 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic.  However, it has failed to be re-organised over the past couple of years for unspecified reasons.

Informed sources said a couple of factors appear to be behind the opera’s non-organization. One has to do with disagreements and differences that led to the change in the shareholding structure of the organization committee.

And the second is the overall downgrading of cultural events in the coastal city now that Paphos is no longer  European Capital of Culture.
