More than 81,000 homes in Cyprus generate energy from photovoltaic systems, a figure representing approximately 16% of the country’s total households.
Approximately one in six homes benefits from lower electricity prices as they have photovoltaic systems, with 81,204 of the 89,157 contracts relating to household consumers and the remainder to small commercial systems.
The figures emerge from net metering contracts for domestic photovoltaic systems, compared with the number of homes in Cyprus as recorded in the latest 2021 census, which reached 491,544.
According to Statistical Service data, 491,545 homes were recorded. Of these, 193,427 are detached houses, 66,404 semi-detached houses, 156,614 flats in apartment blocks, 32,211 homes in mixed-use buildings and 42,888 in other building types. Most are recorded in Nicosia district with 162,930, followed by Limassol with 132,281, Larnaca with 81,881, Paphos with 74,338 and Famagusta with 40,115.
The 16% figure is expected to be smaller in 2025, as the net metering data covers the period up to September 2025, whilst available housing data is based on the 2021 census. The number of homes is estimated to have increased in 2025 compared with 2021.
Wednesday, 31 December 2025, is the final day for submitting applications for installing a photovoltaic system with kilowatt-hour offset calculation, under the net metering scheme.
Those submitting applications after this date will have their bills offset based on the cost per kilowatt-hour, a system considered to offer consumers fewer benefits compared with the existing scheme.
According to official information, those meeting the 31 December deadline—provided all application details are correct—will be included in the net metering offset system, regardless of when the Cyprus Electricity Authority examines their application.
Pending applications currently exceed 4,000, and for this reason, the Cyprus Electricity Authority has procured services to examine them as quickly as possible, starting from the first day of the new year.
The Statistical Service has provided the following definitions for the housing census:
Detached houses are homes built on separate plots with direct access to the road.
Semi-detached houses are buildings on one plot comprising two independent homes joined horizontally or vertically.
Apartment blocks are buildings on one plot containing three or more homes and at least one floor.
Homes in mixed-use buildings are in buildings of at least one floor containing at least three residential units, as well as spaces used for professional and commercial purposes.
Homes in other building types include terraced houses and auxiliary buildings not falling into the above categories.
