An unexpected strike by staff at Eurotunnel, the undersea link between Britain and continental Europe, led to cross-Channel rail traffic being suspended, train operator Eurostar said on Thursday, threatening the Christmas holiday plans of many travellers.
“We’re very sorry to hear that you’re caught up in the disruption today, it’s due to unexpected strike action by Eurotunnel staff. We would recommend postponing your journey if you can, even if it’s until tomorrow,” Eurostar said in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
On its travel updates page, Eurostar said train traffic to and from London was currently suspended.
Numerous unverified posts on X from people trying to reach London or Paris for Christmas earlier said they were stuck in trains or train stations due to an unannounced last-minute Eurotunnel staff strike, some citing trains being possibly turned back to their departure stations.
Getlink GETP.PA, the French company operating the Channel Tunnel, was not immediately reachable for comment.
