As part of the “Pandoteira” project, an initiative aimed at enhancing the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus, volunteers organised the release of barn owls and the placement of artificial nests in the Oroklini area on Monday.
A statement released by the Pandoteira team said that these birds play a vital role in agriculture by primarily feeding on rodents. They are considered a natural and harmless method for the biological control of rodent populations, contrasting with rodenticides that can harm other animals and humans.
The released birds had previously received care and treatment at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre of the Game Fund. Before their release, rings were placed on all birds, a necessary practice providing information about their movements, age and condition if found again.
The release of the birds and the installation of artificial nests were conducted in the presence of children from the Oroklini primary school. The children also had the opportunity to learn about the significance of the Natura 2000 network.
The event was organised within the framework of the “Pandoteira” project by the Game Fund, BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria.
The “Pandoteira” project focuses on managing the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus, aiming to make it more effective, functional, and sustainable. It is co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme and coordinated by the environmental department.
