Retailers operating throughout Cyprus charge different prices for identical products, Philenews reports citing a survey carried out by the island’s Consumers Association and the Ministry of commerce.
Released on Monday, the survey showed that 12 pieces of toilet paper are sold for €10.90 (lowest price) in Nicosia while the same product is sold in a supermarket in Limassol for €7.00 (cheapest price).
At the same time, the lowest price for twelve pieces of toilet paper in Larnaca was €10.50 and in Paphos €11.49.
And in addition to the price differences from one district to another it was also revealed that the same products are sold at different prices in supermarkets in the same city.
For example, in Nicosia the price difference between supermarkets for the same product was 89 cents, in Limassol it was €5.49, in Larnaca the difference was around €1.25 and in Paphos it was €1.81.
There were also cases of products where the lowest selling price in one district was the highest in another one.
The new survey, the department wanted to demonstrate how beneficial the digital platform for comparing the prices of products would be for the pockets of consumers.
From the virtual application of the platform it is concluded that if an e-kalathi (electronic basket system) was in operation consumers would have knowledge of the state of play of retail prices.
