Cat food and water containers as well as makeshift housing structures providing much-needed shade to stray four-legged in the industrial area of Strovolos, Nicosia, have been vandalised.
And all this while Cyprus is experiencing the fiercest heatwave in history, Philenews reported on Monday citing the island’s Green Party.
Strovolos Mayor Andreas Papacharalambous said municipality workers have nothing to do with the destruction and called on anyone with information to file a written complaint.
He also said that – contrary to what the municipality is accused of, modern coin-operated feeders in the linear park of Strovolos were recently installed. And that similar ones will be installed in other parts of the Nicosia suburb.
The Green party said in a statement that “for the umpteenth time this week, unscrupulous people destroyed the improvised shelters near the open market constructed by animal lovers to protect the kittens of the area from the heatwave.”
It added: “This was preceded by a Strovolos Municipality crew which removed containers with water and food from the site. Since then, despite the fact that residents and workers have been re-placing containers for the animals, they seem to disappear the very next day.”
