Police warned the public over phone scams on Tuesday after receiving another complaint about a scammer impersonating a doctor who defrauded an elderly woman out of €7,000.
This is the eighth case of this type of fraud being investigated by the local authorities.
According to the complaint submitted to the Larnaca CID, around 4.20pm on Tuesday, a suspect called an 86-year-old woman and told her that her daughter-in-law had been injured and needed urgent surgery.
He asked for €7,000 which he said was needed for medical expenses and told her that a person would come by her residence to collect the money. Ten minutes later an unknown man went to the 86-year-old’s residence, to whom the pensioner handed over the money.
Police urged the public in case they receive similar phone calls to immediately contact the nearest police station or the citizen’s line on 1460.
